Stockholm Guide

These easter holidays I had the pleasure to visit Stockholm, which is by now the northernmost place on earth i’ve ever been to.

It’s true, the North is different to the rest of Europe. I don’t really know how to put it, but to me everything seemed structured and tidy, people behave calm and unobtrusively so it is fairly rare to hear someone speaking in the subway other than the announcement voice.

But what surprised me the most was that Stockholm is so diverse, speaking everywhere you go the architecture looks different. Once you’re surrounded by tiny colored houses, once you walk along skyscrapers and Wallstreet -like streets and then again you get lost in areas with huge parks and nothing but green around you. To many people Sthlm is their happy place, however to me it lacks in authentic atmosphere, in „flair“ as we’d say in german.

Sill there’re many places worth visiting, if you plan to make a short trip to Stockholm!

Here you find my personal highlights:

WHAT TO DO

  • Gamla Stan: the city’s old town with steep narrow streets, endless shops & cafes and the four famous colored houses, depicted on every postcard, if you belong to the minority, who still sends some back home.

  • Wasa Museum: even if you are like me and not that much interested in the history of the Vikings and in the architecture of giant ships, you definitely have to visit the Wasa Museum. Honestly, it’ll blow your mind, and it is for sure that you’ll never ever see something like that anywhere else in the world. I haven’t turned into a ship fanatic but I’m impressed in a way I never expected to be. So go there!!

  • 2 ½ h Boat Trip through the archipelago, in order to see the typical Swedish houses, which lack in this hip and modern city. Just make sure that you choose warm weather or a seat inside the boat, otherwise you’ll end up an icicle.

  • City Library: doesn’t take longer than a few minutes, however it’s worth looking at and a perfect opportunity to enrich your Instagram account ;) besides how many times will you visit a totally circular library?

  • Stop at Stockholm’s unique Metro stations and wait to capture them with your camera until nobody is in the way.

  • Skansen: the world’s oldest open air museum, that provides an inside into how the Swedes once lived. You could easily spend a day here wandering through this recreated traditional Swedish village and visit the bakery, glassblowers, farms with living animals, reindeer and brown bear enclosure and still not see everything in one single day.

  • SkyView: is probably the most exceptional way to see Stockholm from above. During a 20-minute lasting trip inside a transparent globe, which climbs up the world’s largest spherical building, the Ericsson Globe, you get a 360 degree view of Stockholm. Definitely a must do!

WHERE TO EAT

  • Nystekt Strömming, what looks like a rundown food truck, in fact sells the best fish there is throughout Stockholm! It’s located near Gamla Stan, but the easiest way to find it, might be to search for it on Maps ;) So if you found it and wonder what to order, I’d recommend you the herring on toast with dell source and red onions. Trust me, it’s incredible!

  • Kaffekoppen, a tiny twilit coffee shop, in the very heart of Sthlm, just next to the Nobel Prize Museum at Gamla Stan. Our best orders were: Chai Latte, served in a cup as big as a soup bowl & apple strudel with vanilla sauce, almost as good as at home in Austria hehe ;)

  • Rosendals Trädgard is probably one of the most beautiful coffee shops ever! You find it inside a former conservatory what actually is still one today, only that it is extended with vintage wooden tables and a mouth-watering brunch buffet on weekends.

  • Pom & Flora is the perfect place to start your day. As far as I know has two locations in Sthlm, but both are stylishly furnished and offer an delicious variety of breakfast bowls.

  • Omayma Nytorget, a small fancy coffee shop, with great cappuccino, tasty snacks and vegan friendly options. The interior is instagrammable as always and the staff is super friendly too.

  • Indian Palace, if you’re looking for some variation to all those fancy IT spots, spicy Indian food and mango lassi are always a good idea. Although this restaurant’s lightning is kinda reddish and therefore doesn’t flatter insta pics so much, it impresses by its authentic Indian dishes. And let me tell you the Naan bread is divine!

  • Ostermalm Saluhall, is Stockholm’s faous food hall and presents delicacies everywhere you look. You can either slander from counter to counter and feel the vibrant atmosphere or sit down at one of numerous little restaurants, cafes and bars.

Enjoy your trip!

Bisous,

Lou <3
